Athens resources

What Is Athens?

Athens is an online service that gives access to a variety of databases and services using an individual username and password. Electronic services include specialised websites and e-books, as well as searchable database collections.

After registering, the service can be used anywhere that you have access to the internet, until the end of the academic session in June.

*New for 2009

Anniesland College has recently acquired a large collection of electronic books (e-books) for use by students and staff . The collection is called ebrary and you will find it in your list of Athens resources. The books are full text, and you can copy and paste from them - the citation is provided for you. And of course, they are yours to look at any time of day or night from the comfort of your home.

How to Register for Athens
  • Ask a member of Library staff at either campus for a Copyright Declaration Form
  • Read the form carefully, sign it, and then return it to a member of Library staff
  • You will then receive an information leaflet that explains how to register on the Athens website
  • Self-registration requires a valid email address and must be done on a Library PC
  • Please do not hesitate to ask a member of staff if you need any assistance
  • Now follow the steps below to create your account
Step-by-Step Guide to Registration: Student

Log in to a Library PC and go to the following address in Internet Explorer: http://www.athens.ac.uk

On the homepage, click on the link for Self-registration which is at the left-hand side of the page, under ‘Log On’. You will be taken to the log-in screen.

Enter the username and password from the information leaflet and click ‘Login’. You will now see the screen where you can set up a personal account with your own choice of username and password.

When you have completed all of the required information, simply click ‘Submit details’ at the bottom of the page. You will now be able to log in from the homepage under MyAthens, with the username and password that you have selected. Some important notes:

  • Your chosen username must be between 6 and 20 characters long.
  • It will automatically begin with the prefix mea and a number that denotes the academic year - so for the academic session 2008/2009, the prefix will be mea8.
  • Your password must also be between 6 and 20 characters and should contain at least one character which is not a letter.
  • Please choose a memorable username and password!
Step-by-Step Guide to Registration: Staff

Staff members should obtain a Copyright Declaration Form in the Library, and return the completed form to a member of Library staff. We will then create an account for you.

You will receive your Athens username and password by email, and in an information leaflet which contains full instructions on how to gain access to the resources. Accounts expire at the end of each academic session in June.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the Athens service.
